This sea, most of it on continental shelf, is part of the Pacific Ocean and lies between the Moluccas, New Guinea and Australia. Except eastward its borders with neighboring seas are ill defined. Its southeastward arm is the Gulf of Carpentaria between the York Peninsula and Arnhem Land.
