Torres Strait, construed broadly, refers to the waters between the south coast of Papua-New Guinea and Cape York, Queensland, Australia, and surrounding the Torres Straits Islands and nearby reefs. More narrowly it is the passage between Hammond Reef on the south and Long Reef on the north. At its narrowest it is 20 nautical miles north-south, probably measured not by the reefs, but by the islands beyond them. The strait connects the Coral and Arafura Seas, and is within the Pacific Ocean.
