How is the land laid out?

The Eastern(1) Sierra Madre(2) mountains dominate the area's southeast. Beyond them is plateau, falling off to the northeast into the valley of the Rio Bravo del Norte (Rio Grande). Lakes are small, with the largest freshwater bodies being reservoirs.

Who lives there?

This is one part of a large area of the Americas where Spanish and Roman Catholic Christianity represent the majority.

The Torreón metropolitan area centers at the edge of the state, with suburbs in Durango.

Who was there before?

An Algonquian language called Kikapu was spoken in northern Coahuila.
