5. Tables of the World's Largest Cities, in Tertius Chandler, Four Thousand Years of Urban Growth, 2nd ed. (The Edwin Mellen Press, 1987) lists 'Namhan' for 100 CE. It is unclear what he refers to. The term can refer to a fortified hill in use some centuries later, to a river that goes through Sŏul, or to the cultures of the southern peninsula generally. In 100 CE the capital of Goguryeo, Gungnae City, was in Jilin, Zhongguo (China) and the capital of what later became Silla was Gyeongju, then called Seorabeol. Other early Korean states, confederations and Chinese occupation zones (commanderies) do not reference a city called Namhan and would be unlikely candidates for the location of the peninsula's largest city in any case.
