Antartica--part: Queen(1) Maud Land (Norway(2))--part: 25 to 45 degrees east

How is the land laid out?

This part of Greater Antarctica has the typical four features. Most of the area is high ice cap plateau. Towards the shore are mountains, notably the Thors Haven Mountains(3), which get above 2,500 meters. Beyond the shore are ice shelves, although near the Showa Research Base there is an inlet-like break in these. Beyond the shelves is sea ice, varying seasonally in extent and density.

Who lives there?

There is one permanent research base, Showa, administered by Japan. It is thus probably, but not certain, that the main language spoken is Japanese, and that the main religion--or at least religious background--is a syncretic mix of Buddhism and Shintoism.

Who was there before?

No-one even visited Greater Antarctica before the late 19th century.
