The Buffalo-St. Catherines is centered along the Niagara River that separates New York and Ontario and connects Lakes Erie and Ontario. In 2012 it had a population of 1.6 million1 The city of Buffalo is located in New York on the right bank of the Niagara, at the river's beginning. St. Catherines is located in Ontario on the far side of the Welland Canal where it joins to the lake, which bypasses the unnavigable river. North of Buffalo are the famed Niagara Falls.
The tallest building is the 529 foot One HSBC Place, an office tower from the 1970s. The more famous Buffalo City Hall, done in art deco style, is 32 stories high. The 1896 Ellicott Tower, 10 stories, was the larget office building in the world when built. From the same year is the Guaranty Building, architected by Louis Sullivan. From slightly later is the domed M & T Center, formerly the Buffalo Savings Banks Building.2
