Valparaíso

Valparaíso is located in central Chile, on a bay on the Pacific coast. The Greater Valparaíso Conurbation has 804 thousand residents, with 263 thousand in the city itself.1 The city grew substantially in the 19th century. The late 19th century historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the quarter is 1842 version of La Matriz Church, the city's founding church. Beyond the plains are elevators, one dating from 1883, that help ascent to or descent from the hills.2 Tourists enjoy the city.3 The tallest building is the Edificio Borde Bahia (361 feet, 2009).4
