Sumaré-Americana

The Sumaré-Americana metropolitan area consists of the two cities of Sumaré1 and Americana. It is located in São Paulo2 State, Southeast Region, Brasil (Brazil) just west northwest of Campinas.3 There are 249 and 215 thousand people respectively in Sumaré and Americana proper and 1.041 million in the metropolitan area.4 Sumaré developed as an agricultural center, particularly for coffee, and is now said to be an important center for heroin and cocaine.5 Americana was initially settled by slavers who left the United States of America after the defeat of the Confederate states' rebellion in the 19th century.
