St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador Province, Canada, is located on the east coast of a protuberance of the Avalon Peninsula of northeastern Newfoundland Island. The city's metropolitan population is 171 thousand, with 167 thousand of those within the municipal limits.1
The tallest building is the 11 story Confederation Building housing government offices.2 Outside the city is the Cabot Tower on Signal Hill (1900); the site is a popular tourist spot, in part for the views of city and ocean. The city is along the popular East Coast Trail, which follows the forward edge of the island for 540 kilometers (265 of them marked).
