Below São Paulo, and also in S&atiled;o Paulo1 State, is Brazil's chief port, Santos,2 which handles a great portion of the nation's imports and exports. The city is partly located on São Vicente Island. There are canals within the city Just inland from it is the notoriously polluted industrial zone nicknamed the Valley of Death. There are 419 thousand people in the city proper and 1.908 million in the metropolitan area.3 The tallest building is the 24 story Clube XV Ibis Hotel, which also incudes offices.4 Santos is traditionally an important coffee port, and today is also an important grain port.5
