This passage connects the Bay of Bengal to the rest of the Indian Ocean on the west side of the island of Sri Lanka(1) and east of Tamil Nadu, India. It is just three nautical miles wide at its arrowest for the strait proper. The passage through Adam's Bridge--a chain of islands--is even narrower.
