Bay of Bengal

Description

This arm of the Indian Ocean is wide at the bottom and narrowest at the shores of Bengladesh. Storms surges moving north are amplified by this shape, giving rise to the world's most catastrophic floods when they reach the vast and populous delta lands at the bay's head. The eastern edge of the bay is deep--below 5000 meters--but most of it is on the continental margins.
