New York City is located in New York State in the northeastern United States at the mouth of the Hudson River. It is the most populous city in that nation, and its most populous metropolitan area with 23.6 million people in three states. The center of the city is on the island of Manhattan. It tallest building is the Empire State Building, which--unlike the twin World Trade Towers--survived an airplane crash into its high floors. The Woolworth Building is neo-Gothic and dates from earlier in the 20th century. The Chrysler Building is a contemporary of the Empire State, done in art deco style. Other sights include the Statue of Liberty in the harbor (a World Heritage Site), the Brooklyn Bridge from the 19th century, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the leftovers from the "World's" Fair in Flushing Meadows Park (observatory towers and Unisphere).
New York is an important commodity port.
The J. F. Kennedy International Airport in New York is one of North America's busiest. Second most important is Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey.
