Mobile is located near the head of Mobile Bay on Alabama's Gulf of Mexico coast. It had a metropolitan population of 588 thousand in 2006,1 with 195 thousand living in the city proper in 2010.2 Notable buildings include the RSA Battle House Tower, the city's tallest as of mid-2014 (35 stories, 2007), with a lighted crown visible along the bay for 30 miles; the RSA-Bank Trust Building, the city's tallest from 1965 to 2006; and the 12 story Van Antwerp Building (1907).3 Mobile is an important coal port.4 The USS Alabama Memorial Park is visited by tourists.
