Memphis

Memphis is located on a bluff above the Mississippi River, although the city limits extend down to the flood plain. It has a population of 650 thousand in 2000,1 with 1.275 million in the metropolitan area as of 2009.2 The tallest building is the 37 story building at 100 North Main. Other famous buildings include the 34 story Clark Tower, located away from downtown and the Peabody Memphis hotel, with its daily parade of trained ducks.3 The city is known for its blues music, the home for the rock and roll singer, Elvis Presley, and as the site for the assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., by a white supremacist.
