Manaus

Manaus (formerly Manáos) is the largest city in the Amazonas State of the North Region of Brasil (Brazil). It is centered along the Negro (Black) River, just before its confluence with the Solimões.1 It has a metropolitan population of 1.887 million,2 with 1.887 million within the city proper.3 Its airport is one of the nation's busiest.4 Tourists enjoy access to the Amazonas (Amazon) River and the city's Teatro Amazonas (Amazon Opera House), which dates from the 19th century rubber boom. The tallest buildings as of mid-2014 are the 25 story Cidade de Manaus and the Palácio de Comércio.5
