Knoxville is located at the confluence of the Holston and French Broad rivers, which form the Tennessee River, in the Ridge and Valley part of the Appalachian Mountains, in the state of Tennessee, in the United States of America. It has a metropolitan population of 1.011 million,1 with 174 thousand in the city proper.2 The tallest building in early 2014 was the Plaza Building (27 stories, 1979), whose Club LeConte provides views of the Great Smoky Mountains. The most famous building is the Sunsphere, built for the 1982 World's Fair, which is topped by a sphere.3 At the extreme southeast of the metropolitan area, a small town borders Great Smoky Mountain National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
