Kara (or Karskoje or Karskoye) Sea (More)

Description

This sea lies north of the Russian mainland, east of the double island of Novaya Zemlya (New Land), and west of the islands of Severnaya Zemlya (Northern Land). It is part of the Arctic Ocean and there is no precise line between this sea's northwest and the ocean proper. The sea is shallow and sometimes has drift ice. Its southern shore is deeply irregular: the Baydaratskaya (Bajdarackaja) Bay (guba) west of the Yamal (Jamal) Peninsula (poluostrov) and the Obskaya (Obskaja) Bay east of it are the two most notable arms. It receives both the Ob' and the Yenisey (Jenisej) Rivers.
