Guanajuato, is the capital of Guanajuato State, México, and is located in the plateau of central México. It has a population of about 70 thousand.1 In the 18th century its mines led the world in silver extraction. The city and adjacent mines constitute a World Heritage Site. Some of the streets are underground; others are mountain-side stairways. One mining feature is the 600 meter vertical shaft, the Boca de Inferno. The city's prosperity led to the construction of fortifications, palaces and churches, most famously La Valenciana and La Compaña, deemed masterpieces of religious architecture. Other notable buildings include the center of the university, approached by 113 steps; the Juárez Theatre, with a facade featuring the nine muses; and the Hidalgo market, surmounted by a clock tower.
