Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, a city of 27 thousand,1 sits along the northern shore of the Río de la Plata2 estuary, opposite Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 and preserves some of that influence despite being razed in the early 18th century. UNESCO honors the historic quarter of the city as a World Heritage Site, both for those early influences and for buildings up through the 19th century.3 Tourists visit that quarter for the architecture and the historical museums. As of the spring of 2016, the tallest building is the Hotel Royal (93 feet).4
