चंडीगढ़ (Chanḍīgarh)

चंडीगढ़ (Chanḍīgarh)1) is the capital of both ਪੰਜਾਬ (Panjāb),2 and हरियाणा (Hariyāna)3, states of भारत (Bhārat).4 It is located straddling the foothills of the Lesser Himalayas (locally called the Siwalik Range), and the plain below them. It has a metropolitan population of 1.055 million,5 with 961 thousand in the city itself.6 Albert Mayer and Le Corbusier planned the city in the 20th century. The tallest building is the Secretariat (138 feet, 1959).7 The city is served by चंडीगढ़ (Chanḍīgarh) International Airport, one of the nation's busiest.8 The runways extend into the city but the terminal is in ਸਾਹਿਬਜ਼ਾਦਾ ਅਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਗਰ (Sāhibzādā Ajīt Singh Nagar, shortened to SAS Nagar, also known as Mohali, population 167 thousand)9, in ਪੰਜਾਬ (Panjāb).

Footnotes

1. The च is an unaspirated 'ch.' Some transliterations map this to just 'c.'
2. Punjab in conventional English transliteration.
3. Haryana or Haryāna in conventional English transliteration. The last two vowels are both represented by ा, but I followed convention in only putting a macron on the middle one.
