Castro is located on a shallow inlet (estero) on the eastern coast of the island (and province) of Chiloé1 in the los Lagos Región, in southern Chile. It has a population of 29 thousand.2 In the city and around the estero are many wooden churches, some shingle-sided, which together constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site3 and are visited by tourists.4
