Campinas

Campinas,1 is located beyond the Sierra Geral in the interior of São Paulo2 State, Brasil (Brazil). It serves as a regional center for agriculture (particularly coffee) and industry, especially petroleum refining and petrochemicals. There are 1.084 million people in the city proper and 1.621 million in the metropolitan area.3 The two tallest buildings are the the Centro Empresarial Conceição, an office and shopping tower, and the Mirante, a residential condominum, both reaching 31 stories. Other notable buildings are: the Torre do Costelo, an observatory tower; the Campinas LDS Temple; and the Catredral Metropolitana de (Metropolitan Cathedral of) Campinas. The important airport is Viracopos International Campinas. Nostaliga for trams has led to the revival of an excursion train that loops around pond-centered Taquaral Park.
