This oval sea is barely joined to the remainder of the Atlantic waters by a set of straits at its southwest. It is mostly on the continental margins, with maximum depths of over 2000 meters. The depths are stagnent and lifeless. The oval is made irregular by the Crimean Peninsula, which nearly cuts off the northeast corner of the sea: the Sea of Azov.
