This strait, 19 nautical miles wide at its narrowest, connects the Chukchi and Bering Seas, belonging to the Arctic and Pacific Oceans respectively, and separates the Chukoskiy(1) and Seward Peninsulas, belonging to Asian and North American continents respectively. The Diomede Islands lie in the middle of the strait.
(1) An alternate transliteration from Russian is Cukoskij with a diacritical on the c. More narrowly it is the Anadyr Peninsula.
