Albany, the capital of New York state, is located on the west (right) bank of the Hudson River in the eastern part of the state. It has a metropolitan population of 859,000, although the city proper has less than 100,000.1 In the north end of the metropolitan area the Mohawk River flows into the Hudson. That river's valley forms the only cut through the Appalachian Mountains north of Alabama and the Erie Canal was built through it, terminating in Albany. The city is an important grain port.2
Three notable buildings are the 44 story Erastus Corning Tower, part of the grand Empire State Plaza; the 34 story Alfred E. Smith State Office Building; and the New York State Capitol, built in the 19th century in the style of a French chateau. Also notable is the Egg, which houses two theaters.3
