Yverdons-les-Bains is located at the head of Lake Neuchâtel where the Thielle (Thièle or Zihl)1 enters. The city's name refers to thermal hot springs. The location has been locally important since pre-historic times; the Bay of (Baie de) Clendy is a pile dwelling site, occupied 4000 to 1500 BCE, and honored by UNESCO as part of a World Heritage Site.2 There are also megalithic stones there. The modern city has a population of 23 thousand.3 Perhaps the tallest building is the 15 story Rue des Chaînettes, a residential tower.4
