Владимир (Vladimir)

Владимир (Vladimir) is a city of 345 thousand (2010)1 located on the left (west) bank of the Kl'az'ma (Klyazma) River.2 It is the seat of its oblast, which is within the Central Federal District of Россия (Rossija).3 The tallest buildings as of mid 2014 are a set of 17 story residential buildings.4 The city was much destroyed by the Mongols.5 Three surviving early structures are celebrated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site; these are: the Golden Gate (12th century but rebuilt in the 18th); the Assumption (or Dormition) Cathedral (12th century with a bell tower added later); and the Cathedral of St. Demetrius (12th century). The city is along the Trans-Siberian Railway, which is a tourist attraction.6
