Varese

Varese (locally called Varés) is a city of 82 thousand1 in the foothills of the Alpi,2 overlooking a lake that shares its name, in its eponymous province in the Lombardia (locally Lumbardia)3 Region of Italia.4 It is one of several Italian Alpine places where there are late 16th and 17th century chapels intended for use by Christian pilgrims who could not travel to what is now ישראל (Yisra'el or Israel); together these constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.5 The local one is at the Sacro Monte di Varese and a frazione of the commune of Varese is upon the mountainside.
