Valletta

Valletta is a small town in the southeast of Malta Island, and the capital of the nation of Malta. Its metropolitan area extends over the entire island and thus include 394 thousand people.1 The city proper is little changed since the days when it was planned and constructed by a Christian military group and, because of that preservation and its compactness, it is honored as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Other World Heritage Sites on the island are the Hal Salieni Hypogeum, a Neolithic underground complex dating back to about 2500 BCE, and the Bronze Age temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra, Tarxien, Ta'Hagrat and Skorba.2 Perhaps the tallest building on the island is the 492 foot chimney of the Delimara Power Station (1992).3
