Tshwane,1 whose core called Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa,2 has 2.61 million metropolitan residents.3 It lies in a valley in the veldt surrounded by the Magaliesberg hills, at about 1,370 meters high. Church Square with its statue of Paul Kruger is at the city center. Buildings of note are the South African Reserve Bank (492 feet, 38 stories, 1988) and the slightly shorter ABSA Building (433 feet, 1976) with its external red express elevator for bank executives. Tourists like to visit the city in spring when 70 thousand jacaranda trees bloom.4
