Strait of Gibraltar1

Description

This strait separates the Iberian Peninsula of Europe from northwest Africa. It is traditionally marked by two rocks, the Pillars of Hercules: the Rock of Gibraltar in Europe and Ceuta in Africa, but its narrowest point--about 15 kilometers--is further west. The strait is about 40 kilometers long and has a surface current from west to east. The strait connects the Atlantic Ocean proper with the Mediterranean Sea.
