  • The only South Asian cities that topped one hundred thousand in 1300 or 1400 that are not mapped are Dilli (whose union territory I grouped with nearby states and union territories) and Gaur (in West Bengal, which I group with nearby states). (These areas are covered for other periods--just not this one.) Both cities started in the 100 to 199 thousand range and plunged below 45 thousand by century's end. Dilli suffered a massacre by Timur of Gūrkāniyān (the Timurid Empire) in 1398. Gaur, which had been a provincial capital for the Tughlaq dynasty of Dilli, declined after the Bengali sultans gained independence and made nearby Pandua their capital.
