  • The only South American city that topped one hundred thousand in 1500 or 1600 that is not mapped is Potosí (in the department of the same name). (Potosí Department is not mapped for any period.) Potosí was founded in the middle of the 16th century and reached the 100-199 thousand range by 1600. Its growth was due to the nearby silver mines.
