Смоленск (Smolensk)

Смоленск (Smolensk) is a city of 327 thousand (2010) originally located on the left (east) bank of the Dnepr (Dniepr) River, now on both banks.1 It is the seat of its oblast, which is within the Central Federal District of Россия (Rossija).2 The tallest building as of mid 2014 is the Krasninskoe Shosse (16 stories).3 The city was heavily damaged but not completely destroyed by the Germans in World War II.1
