    Shanghai became the Zhonghua's most important commerical port by the 1930s, and has grown tremendously with national trade. Hangzhou grew in the late 20th century as economic reforms allowed it to resume its position as a trade center near the mouth of the Chang (Yangtze) River. Nanjing grew rapidly after World War II, briefly as a national capital, then as an industrial center.
