Сергиев Посад (Sergijev Posad)1 is a city of 111 thousand (2010)2 located in the Moskovskaja Uplands northeast of Москва (Moskva or Moscow), in the Москва Oblast of the Central Federal District of Россия (Rossija).3 It is significant for the monastery (lavra) of Trinity Sergius, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the complex are: the Trinity Cathedral (1425), which contains a famous icon; the Church of the Holy Spirit (Dukhovskaya), with a dome of white limestone; the Cathedral of the Assumption, with its colorful onion domes; the Belfry (begun 1740); and the monks' cells, built against the 16th century fortress walls in that century and the next.4 The tallest building as of mid-2014 is the 19 story residential tower, 1-Rybnaya 88 (2007).5
