Samarra

Samarra, is a current day Iraqi city, which is a World Heritage Site, is in the center of Iraq on the Dijlah (Tigris) River. It is famous for the Great Mosque of Samarra (ninth century CE) and the Al-Askari Mosque (tenth century CE), which is a pilgrimage site for Twelver Shi'ites.
