Samara(1)

Samara, the capital of the oblast with its name, has more than a million residents. It is located on a horseshoe bend of the Volga River, where the Samara River joins the Volga's east (left bank) shore. It served as Russia's seat of government during World War II when Moscow(2) was temporarily abandoned. Left over from the time is Stalin's bunker, now a tourist site.
