Salzburg

Salzburg is located along the Salzach River1 in north central Österreich (Austria) at the foot of the Alpen (Alps). The name means 'salt fort.' The city has 146 thousand residents.2 The old center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a tourist attraction. The honored buildings include: the Cathedral of St. Rupert and St. Virgil (1628), designed by Santini Solari; the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter, which preserves some features from the High Romanesque; the domed Nonnberg Benedictine on the eastern peak of Mönchberg; the Hohensalzburg Burg (Fortress) overlooking the city, which reached final form in the 17th century; and the Archbishop's Residence (Residenz Salsburg), begun in the 12th century.3 The tallest modern building is the 16 story Europa Hotel.4
