Salamanca

Salamanca, a city of over 154 thousand1 with a metropolitan population of over 205 thousand,2 is located on the right bank of the Tormes River, a tributary of the Duero (Douro), in its eponymous province, in Castile and León Autonomous Community, España (Spain). Its older quarters are honored by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Attention is called to the Roman bridge, the old cathedral and San Marcos church (both 12th century), the Salina and Monterrey palaces (both 16th century), the Plaza Mayor (18th century), the university's Rectorate (originally the Hospital del Estudio, 14th century), and the university's Las Escuelas Mayores (15th century).3 The tallest building is the new cathedral (361 feet, 16th century).4
