Rotorua is a city on the shore of the lake with the same name, both within a caldera inland from the Bay of Plenty that lies off the east shore of New Zealand's North Island. It has 56 thousand residents in the urban area.1 Nearby geothermal features such as the Pohutu Geyser and hot mud pools attract tourists, some of whom stay in the city's tallest building, the Novotel Rotorua (14 stories, 1998).2
