Ρόδος (Ródos)

Ρόδος (Ródos or Ródhos),1 is a city of 50 thousand2 located on the northeastern tip of its eponymous island (part of the Dhodhekánisos3 group) in the Aigaíou4 Decentralized Administration of Ελλάς (Ellás).5 In the medieval era the city was walled by a Christian military order, and these works were modified but not destroyed by the Ottoman Empire. The area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourist attraction,6 has upper and lower portions. Besides the walls, notable buildings include the Great Hospital (now a museum), the Grand Masters' Palace (also a museum) and Saint Mary's Church.7 The tallest building is the Ρόδος (Ródos) Palace Hotel (213 feet, 2004).8

The island is served by the Ρόδος (Ródos) International Airport, one of the nation's busiest,9 located near the city.
