Paarl

Paarl is located on a tributary of the Great Berg River in Western Cape Province, South Africa.1 It has a population of 200 thousand2 and is a tourism and agricultural center. Nearby is Paarl Mountain3 and citrus orchards and vineyards. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here for a time. On a hill is the Afrikaanse Taalmonument (Afrikaans Language Monument), which commemorates the recognition of Afrikaans as an official language. The Lady Grey Tower, originally an office building, is 12 stories high.4
