    Beijing at the beginning of this period was the capital of the Jin Dynasty (northern Zhongguo) and, at the end of the period, the capital of the Yuan (Mongol) Dynasty of Zhongguo (built adjacent to the Jin ruins). The Yuan capital was much larger, perhaps because their empire was larger.
