In the north is part of the Sahara Desert1, in the south the Sahel2, where farming is possible. In the southeast is part of Lake Chad3 and the Niger River4 cuts across the southwest.
Four majority languages prevail in different parts of the country. In the sparsely populated north is Tamasheq; in the southwest is Zarma, a dialect of Songhay; in the three south central departments is Hausa; and in the southeast is Kanuri.
Islam is the majority religion throughout.
Niamey, the capital, is the largest city, with about three quarters of a million residents.
There are two World Heritage Sites: Aïr and Ténéne Natural Reserves and W National Park of Niger.
