Messina (locally called Missina) is a city of 243 thousand1 within its own province level metropolitan city, at the northeast extreme of the island of Sicilia,2 on the strait with the same name that separates the island from the rest of Italia.3 The tallest structure is the Messina Strait Powerline Crossing (761 feet, 1955), although the conductors haven't been used since 1994.4 The metropolitan city, officially defined, includes the Aeolian Islands, which UNESCO honors as a World Heritage Site for their volcanism (particularly on Stromboli and Vulcano), and floral and avian life (particularly on Panarea).5
