Mérida, Extremadura

Mérida, a city of over 58 thousand,1 is located on the right (north) bank of the Guadiana River, in Badajoz Province, Extremadura Autonomous Community, in España (Spain). The tallest building is the Torre (tower) of Mérida (16 stories, 179 feet), which is tied for the tallest building in Extremadura.2 The Roman remains, from when the city was known as Avgvsta Emerita, are honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They include: a bridge over the river; an ampitheatre; a Vitruvian theatre; the Temple of Diana; an arch; the circus; aquaducts; and three dams, two still functioning.3
