Mantova

Mantova (locally and in English called Mantua) is a city of 48 thousand1 centered just southwest of the Mincio2 River, surrounded on three sides by artificial lakes dating from medieval times, in its eponymous province in the Lombardia (locally Lumbardia)3 Region of Italia.4 The city is honored by UNESCO (along with another town in the province) as a World Heritage Site. In its case this attention is on its stages of growth from Roman, to medieval (e.g., 11th century rotunda), to its Renaissance hydrological and architectural works sponsored by the Gonzaga family, to the Baroque (e.g., a theatre).5
