Speakers of Niger-Congo languages have been in parts of Mali for thousands of years, and the Mande group has been distinct from the Atlantic and Volta-Congo group for an estimated 4,000 years. Mandekan gained prominence during the 13th century Empire of Mali. Dialect differences centered on successor states, including one (eventually two) that spoke Bambara.
